Writing Retreat: Day Two

As usual I have more than one thing going on in my brain! As Lynn (our writing coach) presents various strategies to “elevate” our writing, I am bouncing between thinking about my current project and how to apply the techniques to my next project.

I’m about a quarter of the way through what is hopefully the last edit of Nothing Really Bad Will Happen. The next step will be proofreading and formatting. Getting closer!

We’ve been lucky to have beautiful weather today. Scott spent the day walking some trails and encouraged me to join him for a short walk after the last writing session. Refreshing!

Tonight we will have another delicious dinner followed be the evening “salon” during which I will share one of my chapters with the members of the retreat. I’ve chosen a rather depressing one so I hope it will be received okay.

Update: I’m so glad I volunteered to read! All the work I did – revision after revision after revision has proved to be worth it. In fact, one member commented she doubted there was anything else I could do to improve the chapter. She was hooked on every word. Hopefully, the other sixty chapters prove to be almost as engaging!

One of my writing sprint friends apologized for leaving during my read. She simply couldn’t bear to listen to the disturbing scene. But she stressed it was because I had done such an excellent job portraying the horror of the train ride to Dachau that she couldn’t listen anymore. No apologies necessary. What a compliment you have given me!!

I am feeling pretty good about the work I’ve put in over the past few years. I feel like I have grown as a writer and tonight has validated that belief.

I’m loving this experience! Not just learning strategies and honing my own skills but listening to the words written by my friends.

You all have such wonderful stories to tell and it’s my privilege to hear them told by you, with your own unique voice.

Looking forward to Day 3!
