Chapter 21



- Scenes of Paul’s experience in Buchenwald were based on his written accounts and my own research




- The images below are of Paul’s Financial Accounting card. These documents, along with others, were part of a photocopied package sent to me by the Arolsen Archives.



Chapter 22
- The conversation between Sigmund and Rosa and information about Kristallnacht was based on actual news reports and my own research.
- Sigmund did, in fact, hope to get Hans Mezera to cooperate, as evidenced by letters written years later.
Chapter 23





- The scenes of the hanging at Buchenwald and the night Paul got frostbite were drawn from Paul’s written testimonies.


- The scene of Paul being informed he would be freed was inspired by accounts I have read during my research.
- Paul described signing the discharge statement in his written testimonies.
Chapter 24
- The scene of Rose setting up the apartment was based on my personal knowledge of the apartment layout.
- The scene of Rose enrolling Doris in school came from my imagination and was based on my personal knowledge of the neighborhood.
- One of my favorite memories of being at my grandmother’s is of eating the same breakfast described on Doris’s’ first day of school.
- The scene of Doris getting dressed for school was inspired by the many times she spoke about hating her ringlets and ankle-high boots.
- Debby Moskowitz was my mother’s closest friend for years. I am named in her honor.
- The scene in Beechmont Delicatessen was inspired by my memories (best rice pudding, ever!) as a way to provide some insight into Rose’s experience in her new country. Martha Grossman was a real person who became a close family friend.
Chapter 25
- Information related to LITAL came from Sigmund’s letters and documentation.
- Sigmund’s trip to the IKG was based on events as recorded in material I researched.
- The conversation between Sigmund and Rosa was imagined, but based on actual events.

- The scenes of Rosa collecting the valuables and bringing them to the Dorotheum were inspired by actual events.

- The conversation between Sigmund and Rosa was imagined, but based on actual events.
- The JDC emailed me images of Sigmund’s and Rosa’s Transmigration cards. Click on the images below to enlarge.
